The teenage years can be some of the most rewarding and challenging years of parenthood. Like many parents, I have experienced disagreements, misunderstandings and moments when communication with my children seemed difficult. However, I refuse to allow those challenges to define our relationship. Instead, I choose to focus on building a stronger bond with my teenage children every day.
As my children grow older, I realise they need my support and guidance more than ever. Teenagers face a variety of pressures, from schoolwork and exams to friendships, social media and the desire to fit in. These influences can sometimes make life confusing and overwhelming. Because of this, I want my children to know that they can always come to me with their concerns. I want them to feel safe sharing their thoughts, feelings and worries, knowing that they will be listened to with understanding rather than judgement.
Building trust takes time, patience and consistency. I am learning that one of the most important things I can do as a parent is to keep the lines of communication open. Even when conversations are difficult, I encourage my children to express themselves honestly. By listening carefully and showing genuine interest in what matters to them, I can better understand the challenges they face and offer guidance when needed.
While I want my children to enjoy their teenage years, I also believe in maintaining healthy boundaries and expectations. Education is highly valued in our household, and I encourage my children to do their best academically. They are free to spend time with friends and enjoy social activities, but they also understand the importance of responsibility. When expectations are not met, there are consequences. This is not because I wish to control them, but because I love them and want them to develop the discipline and determination that will serve them well throughout life.

At the same time, I recognise that teenagers need more than rules and responsibilities. They also need encouragement, connection and positive experiences with their parents. For this reason, I make a conscious effort to spend quality time with my children. Whether we are sharing a meal, watching a film, going shopping, taking a walk or simply talking about our day, these moments help us stay connected.
What may seem like ordinary activities often become the memories that matter most. Through our time together, I am reminded that strong relationships are built through small, consistent acts of love and attention. Every shared laugh, meaningful conversation and simple outing helps strengthen the foundation of trust between us.
I also understand that these years will not last forever. Before long, my children will become independent adults, pursuing their own dreams and creating lives of their own. Remembering this helps me appreciate the time we have together today. Rather than dwelling on disagreements, I choose to focus on the opportunities we have to learn from one another and grow closer as a family.
Today, I am grateful for the relationship I share with my children and for the progress we continue to make together. Parenting teenagers is a journey of growth for both parent and child. Every day presents a new opportunity to strengthen our bond, deepen our understanding and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Final Thought
Strong relationships with our children are not built in a single day. They are built through love, trust, communication and shared experiences over time. By being present, listening with an open heart and showing consistent support, we can create lasting connections with our children that continue long after they leave home. Father, I declare that I will not grow weary in building relationship with my children, in Jesus Name, Amen.
